Sunday hello —
The weekly round-up from OTD: Your Daily Dose of Soccer History — for those who’d rather catch up once a week than read every day.
A heavyweight week. Two of the most famous matches ever played, the World Cup’s chaotic second tournament, the friendly dinner that became the Old Firm, the origin of the stars on football shirts, a goalkeeper’s tragedy answered by extraordinary grace, and the final that made a curse. Here’s the week:
Monday — 25 May 2005: The Miracle of Istanbul. Liverpool were 3-0 down to Milan at half-time in the Champions League final. Then six second-half minutes happened that football still can’t explain. Their fifth European Cup — and they got to keep the trophy.
Tuesday — 26 May 1989: It’s Up for Grabs Now. The English title came down to the last kick of the season at Anfield. Michael Thomas charged through, and Arsenal stole the championship by the narrowest margin in the game’s history — six weeks after Hillsborough.
Wednesday — 27 May 1934: Second World Cup Begins. Eight matches, 43 goals, every nation scoring. The only World Cup where the host had to qualify, the only one a defending champion refused to defend, and the first to feature an African team.
Thursday — 28 May 1888: The First Old Firm. Celtic beat Rangers 5-2 in their first ever match — then both teams sat down together for supper, music and toasts. The fiercest rivalry in British football began as a friendly.
Friday — 29 May 1958: The First Star Above a Crest. Juventus won a tenth Italian title and marked it with a gold star — giving football a symbol every fan now reads at a glance, from Milan to Boca to Uruguay’s famous four.
Saturday — 30 May 1919: Roberto Chery, the Save, and the Tribute in Sky Blue. A young goalkeeper died from an injury made on his only Uruguay cap. Then his rivals honored him: Brazil wore Peñarol’s colors, Argentina wore Uruguay’s sky blue.
Sunday (today) — 31 May 1961: Benfica End Madrid’s Golden Age. Benfica beat Barcelona in Bern, ended Real Madrid’s five-year reign, and gave Béla Guttmann his masterpiece — before the curse that still shadows Lisbon.

Tomorrow’s episode (1 June): the goalless curse of World Cup opening matches — sometimes the biggest tournament in football begins with ninety minutes of nothing.
If you’ve enjoyed any of these, the most generous thing you can do is forward this email to one friend who’d like it. And please rate the show 5 stars on Apple, Spotify, or Amazon Music — all three move the needle.
