This graphic shows players with minimum 12 World Cup finals goals (plus CR7 and Erling Haaland) plotted against their age on the date of each goal scored.
In essence, it’s clearly illustrated that Mbappé’s relative age to Messi’s puts him on a clear trajectory to surpass Messi in future World Cup finals (provided France qualifies, and Mbappé remains healthy and is selected, of course).
This also shows that Harry Kane also could catch up to Messi in future World Cup finals (similar caveats). And, certainly, Erling Haaland is an interesting inclusion: his relative age to Mbappé may mean he’ll continue to trail the French striker.
Thoughts?
